Prejudiced

Ang at Getting Fit After Forty posted today about her social experiment to see the different ways people treated her if she wore makeup and nicer clothes.

I wear makeup and dress as well as I can and do my hair every day. The reason I do this is because I'm prejudiced. Prejudiced against my fellow fat people. I cannot stand it when I see someone out in public, or, even worse, at work, dressed like a slob. I feel like these are the people that give fat people a bad name. It looks as if they've given up, and they might as well have "abuse me" signs taped to their backs.

It really is all about how you present yourself. I always try to walk tall with my head up, and I don't see or hear people making fun of me. I have noticed, though, that, on occasion, if I am really tired and not paying attention to how I am walking or moving, there tends to be more pointing or snickering.

I know some would say that the people who don't bother suffer from low self-esteem, but I don't consider myself to have great self-esteem. Most of the time I don't even like myself. But there has got to be something more that makes people just give up.

I. Will. Never. Give. Up.

I thought it was just me! I hate it when people don't make the effort. Its as though they're saying I'm overweight, what's the point. Its nice to feel good about ourselves regardless of our weight and it helps boost confidence.

Great blog!

Don't judge me because I don't always wear makeup. Okay? I do put on my best casual wear when I go out, though. I do fix up my hair.

I do wear makeup, but only when I'm going out. I don't wear it at home.

=)

(By best casual wear, I don't mean sweats. lol) I wear nice jeans and a nice top.

Jo, I definitely did not mean to make anyone feel bad. I actually wasn't even talking about makeup. I figure makeup's a personal choice. I love makeup (and Sephora loves me!). Some people hate it. I was talking about people who obviously just don't make an effort, and you can tell from far away (like across the parking lot LOL...can't tell if people are wearing makeup from that far). I don't necessarily wear makeup on the weekends, either. But, I figure that if I can find decent clothes that fit at my size (and I'm generally the biggest person around), then why can't they make the effort?

Fat (mostly) or thin (rarely), I'm a woman who won't leave the house--even to check my mail--without putting on makeup first. I don't even let my husband see me without eye makeup--and we've been married 40 years! LOL

I agree, when we're fat it's especially important to look our best, not just for the image we project to the outside world, but also to give ourselves an ego boost because we sure as hell need it. :-)
